【 摘 要 】
The policy notes for Ecuador are part ofa series of books that the Bank prepares periodicallysummarizing its accumulated knowledge on the economic andsocial issues of member countries. The timing of the notes, early 2007, coincides with a new presidential period, whichoffers the country the opportunity to consolidate many ofthe gains of the past few years, while building the basisfor a more dynamic, equitable and inclusive growth process. The analysis contained in the policy notes indicates thatEcuador is a country with great potential, with a societythat has exhibited incredible resilience and the ability toadapt to new challenges. The Ecuadoran society has overcomeadversity with great determination in the past few years.Periodic economic crises, external shocks, and even naturaldisasters tested the country's ability to cope withdifficulties. Despite these challenges, the country hasmaintained a forward-looking perspective and has achievedsome important goals. Economic stability in the past fewyears has given Ecuador the opportunity for a period ofsustained economic growth. During this period severaldevelopment indicators have improved, and several sectors ofthe economy have demonstrated the dynamism andentrepreneurship that are present the Ecuadoran culture. Ingeneral, surveys show that Ecuadorans feel that theirindividual conditions are likely to improve in the future. The notes cover many areas and subjects but are grouped intothree broad themes: preserving stability and acceleratinggrowth, promoting sustainable and equitable socialdevelopment, and improving governance and strengtheninginstitutions. The remainder of this chapter summarizes themain findings and recommendations of the policy notes.
