【 摘 要 】
This book is an outcome of a series ofstudy visits to Singapore for African policy makersinitiated by Jee-Peng Tan in 2005 with support from TommyKoh in Singapore and Birger Fredriksen, Yaw Ansu, andDzingai Mutumbuka at the World Bank. Starting in the1960s-earlier if Japan is included-a number of East Asianeconomies began achieving growth rates well above theaverage and were able to maintain that pace until nearly theend of the 1990s. Countries, large and small, have struggledto imitate the industrial prowess of the East Asianpacesetters and to exploit the opportunities presented byglobalization to expand exports. But approximating the EastAsian benchmarks has proven difficult, and growthaccelerations have tended to be remarkably transient.
