【 摘 要 】
This paper uses the recently collectedLiving Standard Measurement Study-Integrated Surveys onAgriculture Initiative data sets from five countries inSub-Saharan Africa to provide a comprehensive overview ofland and labor market participation by agrarian householdsand to formally test for failures in factor markets. Undercomplete and competitive markets, households can solve theirconsumption and production problems separately, so thathousehold factor endowments do not predict input demand. This paper implements a simple, theoretically grounded testof this separation hypothesis, which can be interpreted as areduced form test of factor market failure. In all fivestudy countries, the analysis finds strong evidence offactor market failure. Moreover, those failures appeargeneral and structural, not specific to subpopulationsdefined by gender or geography.
