Analysts expect China to continueimproving the efficiency of energy production and use, thereby decoupling the traditional relationship betweengross domestic product (GDP) and energy consumption.Environmentally acceptable economic growth is closely linkedwith further improvements in the overall efficiency ofenergy use. Both of these goals will require a continuedincrease in the use of coal to produce electricity, alongwith a more deliberate and rapid transition from direct coalcombustion to the use of electricity and other cleanercoal-based fuel sources, especially for cooking, spaceheating, and industrial furnaces. The opportunity forenvironmental improvement in conjunction with economicgrowth lies in the wise adoption of clean coal technologies(CCT) for both the electric power and non-power sectors. This report presents CCT options for the power sector thatcan help China achieve these twin goals. The CCT optionsare: 1) air pollution controls for particulates, sulphurdioxide, and nitrous oxide; and 2) advanced electricitygeneration technologies--supercritical pulverized-coalboilers, atmospheric and pressurized fluidized-bedcombustors, and integrated gasification combined cycleplants. Volume 1 of this report explains the project costingmethodology and the electric power CCT options. Volume 2summarizes the development and technology assessment ofclean coal technologies for the non-power sector in China.
