【 摘 要 】

Not until the end of the twentiethcentury, the "second globalization," has the ratioof trade to Gross Domestic Product been comparable to thatduring the first globalization, which took place at the endof the nineteenth century and was interrupted by World WarI. Technological progress has increased the importance ofthe international division of labor and of global productionand distribution networks. Multinational corporatios havebeen a driving force behind these developments. As atransition economy, Poland provides an interesting case forstudy, as its sudden opening to foreign investment after along period of isolation allows the process of integratiointo global networks to be studies more clearly. UsingPoland as a case study, the authors study multinationalcorporatios' role in integrating a host country intothe increasingly international division of labor. Theyprovide evidence that inflows of foreign direct investmentare increasing Poland's participation in globalproduction and distribution networks. They conclude thatbecause of the large volume of foreign direct investmentinflows expected in Poland in the near future, Poland'sexports--driven by fragmented production production--willcontinue to expand at even faster rates than observed there recently.
