【 摘 要 】
Existing evidence on the effect offoreign bank penetration on lending to small and medium-sizeenterprises is ambiguous. Case studies of developingcountries show that foreign banks lend less to such firmsthan domestic banks do. But cross-country studies find thatforeign bank entry fosters competition and reduces interestrates, benefits that should extend to all firms. The authorsuse data from a large cross-country survey of enterprises toinvestigate this issue. Their results suggest that foreignbank penetration improves financing conditions (both thequantities of financing and the terms) for enterprises ofall sizes, although it seems to benefit larger firms more.
