The author develops a view of theinformal sector in developing countries primarily as anunregulated micro-entrepreneurial sector and not as adisadvantaged residual of segmented labor markets. Drawingon recent work from Latin America, he offers alternativeexplanations for many of the characteristics of the informalsector customarily regarded as evidence of its inferiority.
