【 摘 要 】
Are the household characteristics thatare good for transition to a more diversifiedmarket-oriented development process in Vietnam alsoimportant for reducing poverty? Or are there tradeoffs? Thedeterminants of both poverty incidence and participation inrural off-farm activities are modeled as functions ofhousehold and community characteristics using comprehensivenational household surveys for 1993 and 1998. Despite somecommon causative factors, such as education and region ofresidence, the processes determining poverty and inhibitingdiversification are clearly not the same. Participation inthe emerging rural nonfarm market economy will be the routeout of poverty for some, but certainly not all, ofVietnam's poor.
