【 摘 要 】

In recent years, comparative economicsexperienced a revival, with a new focus on comparingcapitalist economies. The theme of the new research is thatinstitutions exert a profound influence on economicdevelopment. The authors argue that, to understandcapitalist institutions, one needs to understand the basictradeoff between the costs of disorder and those ofdictatorship. They then apply this logic to study thestructure of efficient institutions, the consequences ofcolonial transplantation, and the politics of institutional choice.
