【 摘 要 】
Vietnam experienced a dramatic declinein child labor during the 1990s. The authors explore thisdecline in detail and document the heterogeneity acrosshouseholds in both levels of child labor and in theincidence of this decline in child labor. The authors find astrong correlation between living standards improvements andchild labor so that much of the variation in declines inchild labor can be explained by variation in livingstandards improvements. Ethnic minority children and thechildren of recent migrants appear to remain particularlyvulnerable even by the late 1990s. Children of allethnicities in the Central Highlands appear to have missedmany of the improvements in the 1990s, while children in therural Mekong and in Provincial Towns have experienced thelargest declines in child labor. The results suggestembedding efforts against child labor within an overallantipoverty program. The authors find that the opening orclosing of household enterprises seems to be associated withincreases in child labor. So attention should be devoted tothe activities of children in the government's currentprogram to stimulate nonfarm enterprises.
