【 摘 要 】
The analysis of firm-level datacollected through parallel international enterprise surveyscan reveal important linkages between governance constraintsand business growth and investment. The World BusinessEnvironment Survey (WBES), an initiative led by the WorldBank Group in 1999 and 2000, collected enterprise data frommore than 10,000 firms in 80 countries. Econometric analysisof responses to that survey points to a strong associationbetween corruption, financing, regulatory and taxconstraints, policy uncertainty, and protection ofintellectual property rights with firm-level performance, asmeasured by sales and investment growth and participation inthe formal economy. This book present the core WBESquestionnaire and survey findings, and confirms thesignificance of key country conditions on the firmperformance and behavior. The finding provide a basis forregional comparison, but suggest the need for caution whenaveraging across categories, especially in light of countryconditions that can significantly affect firm-level salesand investment.
