【 摘 要 】
The book provides information, andguidance for policymakers, the development community, andothers in the critical area of "behind the border"barriers to trade. With a view to promoting efforts tostrengthen Africa's capacity to meet trade standards,and comply with technical regulations, the book examines thelink between those standards, and regulations and exportsuccess in case studies of five countries: Kenya,Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa, and Uganda. Each chapterdescribe the economic context of trade standards in acountry, and examines the mechanisms by which standards, andregulations are established, and revised at the local, andinternational levels. The authors - local experts in theregion - review existing trade regulations, and determinethe extent to which they are consistent with internationalpractices. They also analyze each country's physicalinfrastructure, organizational capacities, and currentstandard implementation process, and, consider the probableimpact of new standards, regulations, and relatedproduction/marketing practices in key industries. The firstcomprehensive assessment of the relationship between tradestandards, and development priorities in Sub-Saharan Africa,this book offers concrete action plans for supportingAfrican firms, and farmers in their efforts to improveproduct quality, and reach international markets in keycommodity sectors.
