This study was designed to go below theradar of Zambia's macroeconomic developments to examinetrends, constraints, and opportunities in specific economicsubsectors. It sought to build upon existing and plannedanalyses within the country in order to better understand:1) the underlying bases for competitive advantage anddisadvantage in the evolving Zambian economy; 2) the likelysustainability of those patterns of economic diversificationwhich have already taken place; 3) what linkages have andhave not been formed within the agricultural and miningsectors which might still be a basis for future growth; 4)the specific effects of certain macroeconomic developmentsand "external" events on different stakeholdersand the types of responses they have made to these; and 5)what measures could be taken to improve competitivenesswithin the Zambian economy and accelerate future growth. Thework was designed to complement on-going analytical work,especially by the Export Board of Zambia and the ZambiaNational Farmers Union, ans also complement on-going work toassess the constraints and opportunities facingZambia's tourism sector. The present study draws uponavailable data, an updated analysis of agriculturalproduction costs and profitability, and surveys of privateagribusiness, non-traditional export, and mining (andmining-related companies. A parallel analysis was undertakenon the food and agricultural import demand into SouthAfrica, a potential trade destination.
