【 摘 要 】

This volume presents data from 53African countries, arranged in separate tables or matricesfor more than 500 development indicators. The indicators aregrouped into 14 chapters: background data, nationalaccounts, prices and exchange rates, money and banking, theexternal sector, external debt and related flows, governmentfinance, agriculture, power, communications andtransportation, public enterprises, labor force andemployment, aid flows, social indicators, and environmentalindicators. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction onthe nature of the data and their limitations, followed by aset of charts, statistical tables, and technical notes thatdefine the indicators and identify their specific source.Most of the indicators present data by year for the period1970-99. Many indicators also include averages or averagegrowth rates for three recent time periods, covering theyears 1975-99 or the most recently available year. Effortshave been made to standardize the data to facilitatecross-country comparisons. The data in this book are derivedfrom a variety of sources. In most cases, the originalsources are the national statistical services in Africa. Inaddition, many international agencies collect or compiledata on African countries and organize national data in astandardized framework. The data have been supplemented byWorld Bank staff estimates to help address problems ofmissing or inconsistent data from standard sources.
