【 摘 要 】
This report examines gender differencesin the Mexican economy, with a focus on the labor market. Itexamines gender issues over the course of the life cycle, beginning with education and child labor, continuing withadult urban and rural labor force participation, andconcluding with the situation of elderly Mexican men andwomen. While each chapter uses different data sources andanalytical methodologies, the volume as a whole is guided bya gender perspective that examines the situations of bothmen and women as distinct groups and in relationship to oneanother. Drawing on national labor market statistics, specialized regional household surveys, and firm-level data, the chapters that comprise the volume are rich in detailedquantitative analysis, which is presented in relativelynon-technical language. This report has its origins in thecommissioning of a series of technical papers by the WorldBank, in collaboration with several Mexican governmentagencies, including the Comision Nacional de la Mujer andthe Secretaria de Hacienda y Credito Publico. A number ofadditional studies resulted from the first national Workshopon Gender Analysis and Public Policies in April 1997.
