Most African countries have ratified theAfrican Charter on Human and People's Rights, whichstates the rights to health, education, and promoting,safeguarding, and reinforcing mutual respect and tolerance.In Sub-Saharan Africa alone, some 17.2 million have died ofHIV/AIDS. The focus here is, therefore, on how traditionalhealers and indigenous knowledge can empower communities todeal with the social consequences of the pandemic, and, atthe same time, be able to ensure that government resourcesare actually being used to their benefit. This Notessuggests a mini epidemiological study be undertaken bycommunity member and for the community. The process ofcommunity-managed research could be facilitated bytraditional healers, local NGOs to balance any attempt bylocal elites to dominate the process.
