【 摘 要 】

Can increasing sophistication in serviceexports lead to economic growth? Although services werehistorically produced primarily for domestic consumption,they are gradually becoming more productive, tradable andunbundled. The authors construct an index of "serviceexports sophistication" to document this phenomenon.Panel data estimations indicate a positive associationbetween growth in per capita income and highersophistication of service exports. The results also suggestthat this phenomenon is growing in importance over time.Considering the limits of traditional industrialization inigniting global growth, the results provide an alternative channel.
