【 摘 要 】

This paper investigates whether theEthiopian economy is undergoing a virtuous process ofstructural change. In particular, it assesses the relativecontributions of within-sector and between-sectorproductivity to output per capita growth. Based on datadisaggregated into eight sectors for the period 1996-2011,the analysis suggests that the structure of output haschanged considerably -- predominantly from agriculture toservices -- but changes in the composition of employmenthave lagged behind. Labor productivity growth has beenstrong across most sectors, albeit mainly driven bywithin-sector productivity improvements. Nonetheless, thepace of structural change is accelerating and its relativecontribution to output growth is increasing.
