The Ministry of Environment and NaturalResources of the Government of Sri Lanka is the apex bodyunder which all environmental issues and policy matters areaddressed. The Global Affairs Division of the Ministry ofEnvironment and Natural Resources is tasked with formulatingpolicy and strategic planning and liaise with theinternational organizations dealing with globalenvironmental issues and is the Designated NationalAuthority (DNA) for matters arising out of the KyotoProtocol. Under the Kyoto protocol, the Clean DevelopmentMechanism (CDM) provides for Green House Gas (GHG)mitigation projects that contribute towards sustainabledevelopment in developing nations and the net emissionreductions can be traded to a developed nation to meet itsKyoto obligations. The report begins with green house effectwith GHG emissions and their contributions to globalwarming. To highlight the gravity of the problem variousprojections are presented on future climate change, extremeweather events, sea level rise and their impact ondeveloping countries. It describes the global initiative totackle climate change and specifically details the Kyoto protocol.
