Demographic aging strains pensionsystems around the world, leading frequently to largepension expenditures and deficits. The increasing awarenessof a looming pension crisis has led to a wave of pensionreforms, particularly in the last decade.The purpose ofthe report is to examine the Chilean experience indeveloping the market for retirement products, includingprogrammed or phased withdrawals (PWs) and annuities, and todraw lessons for other countries that are also makingefforts to develop such markets or anticipate the need to doso. The report examines the performance of the market andthe evolution of the regulatory framework since theimplementation of the pension reform of 1981, but with afocus on the past 10 years.
