【 摘 要 】
Global warming and changes in climatehave already had observed impacts on natural ecosystems andspecies. Natural systems such as wetlands, mangroves, coralreefs, cloud forests, and Arctic and high-latitudeecosystems are especially vulnerable to climate-induceddisturbances. However, enhanced protection and management ofbiological resources and habitats can mitigate the impactsand contribute to solutions as nations and communitiesstrive to adapt to climate change. Biodiversity is thefoundation and mainstay of agriculture, forests, andfisheries. Biological resources provide the raw materialsfor livelihoods, agriculture, medicines, trade, tourism, andindustry. Forests, grasslands, freshwater, and marine andother natural ecosystems provide a range of services oftennot recognized in national economic accounts but vital tohuman welfare: regulation of water flows and water quality, flood control, pollination, decontamination, carbonsequestration, soil conservation, and nutrient andhydrological cycling. Current efforts to address climatechange focus mainly on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG)emissions by adopting cleaner energy strategies and onreducing the vulnerability of communities at risk byimproving infrastructure to meet new energy and water needs. This book offers a compelling argument for includingecosystem-based approaches to mitigation and adaptation asan essential pillar in national strategies to addressclimate change. Such ecosystem-based strategies can offercost-effective, proven, and sustainable solutions thatcontribute to, and complement, other national and regionaladaptation strategies.
