The focus of this document is to providea wide range of ideas and options to improve the inclusionof environmental sustainability throughout the roadtransportation project cycle (system planning, projectplanning and design, construction, and operation andmaintenance) based on environmental sustainabilityindicators and highlighting environmentally sustainableproducts and materials for road construction. Sustainableeconomic growth in low- and middle-income countries is a keyto poverty reduction and shared prosperity, which in part isdependent on reliable and safe transportation systems. Roadand highway systems provide a critical function in creatingand maintaining a desirable quality of life.
