【 摘 要 】
This paper investigates the impact ofremittances on financial inclusion. This is an importantissue given recent studies showing that financial inclusioncan have significant beneficial effects on households. Usinghousehold-level survey data for El Salvador, the authorsexamine the impact of remittances on households' use ofsavings and credit instruments from formal financialinstitutions. They find that although remittances have apositive impact on financial inclusion by promoting the useof deposit accounts, they do not have a significant androbust effect on the demand for and use of credit fromformal institutions. If anything, by relaxing creditconstraints, remittances might reduce the need for externalfinancing from financial institutions, while at the sametime increasing the demand for savings instruments.
