This paper uses cross-country firm-levelsurveys to gauge access to financial services and theimportance of financing constraints for African enterprises.The paper compares access to finance in Africa and otherdeveloping regions of the world, within Africa acrosscountries, and across different groups of firms. It relatesfirms' access to finance to firm and banking systemcharacteristics and discusses policy challenges.
