The primary objective of this report isto provide a coherent and comprehensive review on integratedurban water management (IUWM) approach to assist publicauthorities to identify and address the future challenges ofurban water supply, sanitation and flood management inAfrican cities. This report presents the existing and futurechallenges in Africa, the possible options for innovativetechnologies and approaches for their breakthrough and a wayforward to achieve the objectives of IUWM. It highlightstechnical and institutional constraints of the IUWM inAfrica. It presents the global and African best practicesand trends in IUWM which are linked to urban development andwhich have very good lessons learnt that can be sharedwithin and among the cities in Africa. The report consistsof four chapters. Chapter two reviews the existingcondition, future challenges and opportunities in UrbanWater Sector (UWS) in Africa. The review covers the currentsituation of urban water systems and their managementapproaches; the major future change pressures (climatechange, population growth and urbanization, deterioration ofinfrastructure systems) and their impacts on UWS; andopportunities for implementing the IUWM approach in Africa.Chapter three introduces the key concepts and conceptualframework of IUWM. The framework has been supplemented byappropriate technologies and innovative approaches of IUWMthat will be suitable for cities in Africa. This chapteralso presents the global experiences and best practices ofIUWM that can be shared within the Africa cities. Chapterfour presents case studies to demonstrate how the IUWMframework can be operationalized and to select theappropriate technologies and approaches as discussed inchapter 3 based on the different typologies of the citiesand development stages in Africa. The typologies include anemerging town in Uganda (Masindi), a city with partiallydeveloped infrastructure in Ghana (Accra) and fullydeveloped city in South Africa (Cape Town). Based on thecases, a few recommendations (road map) for theimplementation of IUWM approach for other cities in Africahave been presented in chapter four.
