【 摘 要 】
This study explores the complex processof transit and land-use integration in rapidly growingcities in developing countries. It first identifies barriersto and opportunities for effective coordination of transitinfrastructure and urban development. It then recommends aset of policies and implementation measures for overcomingthese barriers and exploiting these opportunities.Well-integrated transit and land development create urbanforms and spaces that reduce the need for travel by privatemotorized vehicles. Areas with good access to public transitand well-designed urban spaces that are walkable andbikeable become highly attractive places for people to live, work, learn, play, and interact. Such environments enhance acity's economic competitiveness, reduce local pollutionand global greenhouse gas emissions, and promote inclusivedevelopment. These goals are at the heart oftransit-oriented development (TOD), an urban form that isincreasingly important to sustainable urban futures.Thisbook uses a case study approach. It draws lessons fromglobal best-case examples of transit-oriented metropolisesthat have direct relevance to cities in developing countriesand elsewhere that are currently investing in bus rapidtransit (BRT) and other high-capacity transit systems. Italso reports the results of two original in-depth casestudies of rapidly growing and motorizing cities thatintroduced extended BRT systems: Ahmedabad, India andBogota, Colombia. Two shorter case studies enrich theunderstanding of factors that are critical to transformingcities with transit.
