【 摘 要 】
Social welfare functions that assignweights to individuals based on their income levels can beused to document the relative importance of growth andinequality changes for changes in social welfare. In a largepanel of industrial and developing countries over the past40 years, most of the cross-country and over-time variationin changes in social welfare is due to changes in averageincomes. In contrast, the changes in inequality observedduring this period are on average much smaller than changesin average incomes, are uncorrelated with changes in averageincomes, and have contributed relatively little to changesin social welfare.
