This report aims to provide an update ofthe profile of the poor and describe the dynamics of povertyand inequality in the Kyrgyz Republic during 2007-2011. Thisperiod was marked by economic and political volatility whichadversely impacted the country's capacity to achievesome of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG). The lack ofprogress in indicators related to maternal and child healthand combating HIV/AIDS and other diseases continues to be ofconcern. However, in comparison to other low-incomecountries, non-monetary indicators of poverty in the KyrgyzRepublic fare relatively well in such areas as health,education, and access to basic infrastructure services. Thereport finds that at the micro-level the leading factorsassociated with poverty are household demographiccharacteristics. Larger and younger households withrelatively fewer income-generating members and more netconsumers, such as children, are more prone to poverty.Female-headed households have lower consumption per capitaall other things held equal.
