One of the Millennium Development Goals(MDG) is to improve maternal health, with the target ofreducing maternal mortality by three-quarters between 1990and 2015. In an effort to accelerate progress towardsachieving this MDG, this paper brings together high-qualityinformation on a wide range of promising approaches that aimto improve maternal health outcomes. These global promisingapproaches, based on field research and practice byexperienced organizations working in this arena, can serveas a useful starting point in the process to improve currentmaternal health programming. This paper will be useful forWorld Bank staff when assisting client countries indeveloping their National Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers(PRSPs) and costing health sector plans. Moreover, the paperprovides Bank staff with substantive evidence to share withgovernments on how best to prioritize and implement maternalhealth programs, and scale up efforts to achieve progress.Although primarily intended for use by Bank staff, we hopethis guide will also be useful to governments, otherinternational donor agencies, and nongovernmentalorganizations (NGOs), who are interested in improvingmaternal health, and minimizing the disparities thatcurrently exist between industrialized and developing countries.
