【 摘 要 】
In many poor countries, the recentincreases in prices of staple foods raise the real incomesof those selling food, many of whom are relatively poor, while hurting net food consumers, many of whom are alsorelatively poor. The impacts on poverty will certainly bevery diverse, but the average impact on poverty depends uponthe balance between these two effects, and can only bedetermined by looking at real-world data. Results usinghousehold data for ten observations on nine low-incomecountries show that the short-run impacts of higher staplefood prices on poverty differ considerably by commodity andby country, but, that poverty increases are much morefrequent, and larger, than poverty reductions. The recentlarge increases in food prices appear likely to raiseoverall poverty in low income countries substantially.
