【 摘 要 】
This paper examines the role of theIndian diaspora in the outsourcing of work to India. Thedata are taken from oDesk, the world's largest onlineplatform for outsourced contracts. Despite oDesk minimizingmany of the frictions that diaspora connections havetraditionally overcome, diaspora connections still matter onoDesk, with ethnic Indians substantially more likely tochoose a worker in India. This higher placement is theresult of a greater likelihood of choosing India for theinitial contract, due in large part to taste-basedpreferences, and substantial path dependence in locationchoices. The paper further examines wage and performanceoutcomes of outsourcing as a function of ethnic connections.
