【 摘 要 】
This paper investigates the differentialimpacts of foreign ownership on wages for different types ofworkers (in terms of educational background and gender) inVietnam using the Vietnam Household Living Standards Surveysof 2002 and 2004. Whereas most previous studies havecompared wage levels between foreign and domestic sectorsusing firm-level data (thus excluding the informal sector),one advantage of using the Living Standards Surveys in thispaper is that the data allow wage comparison analyses toextend to the informal wage sector. A series of Mincerianearnings equations and worker-specific fixed effects modelsare estimated. Several findings emerge. First, foreign firmspay higher wages relative to their domestic counterpartsafter controlling for workerspersonal characteristics.Second, the higher the individual workers' levels ofeducation, the larger on average are the wage premiums forthose who work for foreign firms. Third, longer hours ofwork in foreign firm jobs relative to working in theinformal wage sector are an important component of the wagepremium. Finally, unskilled women experience a largerforeign wage premium than unskilled men, reflecting the lowearning opportunities for women and a higher gender gap inthe informal wage sector.
