【 摘 要 】
This paper uses a unique micro paneldataset of Brazilian students to investigate the impact ofworking while in school on learning outcomes. The potentialendogeneity is addressed through the use ofdifference-in-difference and instrumental variableestimators. A negative effect of working on learningoutcomes in math and Portuguese is found. The effects ofchild work range from 3 to 8 percent of a standard deviationdecline in test score, which represents a loss of about aquarter to a half of a year of learning on average.
