【 摘 要 】
This paper examines whether theincreased openness and technological innovation in East Asiahave contributed to an increased demand for skills in theregion. The author explores a unique firm level data setacross eight countries in Asia and the Pacific region. Theresults strongly support the idea that greater openness andtechnological innovation have increased the demand forskills, especially in middle-income countries. Inparticular, while the presence in international markets hasbeen skill enhancing for most middle-income countries, thisis not the case for manufacturing firms operating in Chinaand in low-income countries. The author interprets this tosupport the premise that if international integration in theregion continues to intensify and technology continues to beskilled biased, policies aimed at mitigating the skillsshortages should produce continual and persistent increasein skills.
