【 摘 要 】
This paper investigates whether theagglomeration of economic activity in regional clustersaffects long-run manufacturing total factor productivitygrowth in an emerging market context. It explores a largefirm-level panel dataset for Chile during a periodcharacterized by high growth rates and rising regionalincome inequality (1992-2004). The findings are clear-cut.Locations with greater concentration of a particular sectordid not experience faster growth in total factorproductivity during this period. Rather, local sectordiversity was associated with higher long-run growth intotal factor productivity. However, there is no evidencethat the diversity effect was driven by the localinteraction with a set of suppliers and/or clients. Theauthors interpret this as evidence that agglomerationeconomies are driven by other factors, such as the sharingof access to specialized inputs not provided solely by asingle sector, such as skills or financing.
