Water and Sanitation Program (WSP) isworking to leverage domestic private sector expertise andresources to deliver services that benefit the poor. The aimis to help an estimated 1.5 million poor people gainsustained access to improved water supply and sanitationservices and leverage over US$80 million in investments bydonors, governments, and the domestic private sector throughthree main activity lines: building water and sanitationbusiness models for the poor; public-private partnerships innon-traditional markets; and, banking the unbanked water andsanitation providers. Encouraging creditworthy utilities tofinance a portion of their investment program usingcommercial debt will improve the allocation of public fundsfor investment. Taking steps to address performance issuesthat hinder access to credit could see significantly moreinvestment in water by the private sector, resulting inimproved access in urban areas.
