【 摘 要 】
The Russian banking sector includesapproximately 1,000 banks, but is it competitive? This paperanalyzes bank competition in Russia during 2002-2008. Theauthors examine indicators of concentration andcontestability, and compute non-structural measures ofcompetition. They compare competition in Russia to that inBrazil, China, and India, and contrast competition acrossdifferent groups of banks within Russia. Contestability inRussia is obstructed by uneven supervisory practices and anunclear exit process. Non-structural measures reveal thatbanks in Russia are less competitive than those in Brazil.Within Russia, large banks and state-owned banks exert moremarket power than the smaller and privately-ownedinstitutions. Finally, business-oriented banks are morecompetitive than those concentrating on lending to individuals.
