【 摘 要 】
Since the development of human capitaltheory, countless estimates of the economic benefits ofinvesting in education for the individual have beenpublished. While it is a universal fact that in allcountries of the world the more education one has the higherhis or her earnings, it is nevertheless important to knowthe empirical returns to schooling. However, simply knowingaverage returns is not useful in a world of heterogeneity. This paper finds increasing returns going from the lower tothe higher end of the earnings distribution, but with someimportant differences across regions. The returns increaseby quantile for Latin America. The returns decrease byquantile for most East Asian countries, producing an overallequalizing effect. India and Pakistan demonstrate oppositeresults. In Ghana, the returns across the distribution areflat, while for Kenya and Tanzania education is dis-equalizing.
