【 摘 要 】
This paper analyzes the socioeconomicdeterminants of HIV infection and related sexual behaviorsusing the 2004 Lesotho Demographic and Health Survey. Theauthors find that in Lesotho education appears to have aprotective effect: it is negatively associated with HIVinfection (although not always significantly) and itstrongly predicts preventive behaviors. The findings alsoshow that married women who have extra-marital relationshipsare less likely to use a condom than non-married women. Thisis an important source of vulnerability that should beaddressed in prevention efforts. The paper also analyzes HIVinfection at the level of the couple. It shows that in 41percent of the infected couples, only one of the twopartners is HIV infected. Therefore, there are stillopportunities for prevention inside the couple.
