In January 1992, at the invitation ofthe Zambian Government, CARE International commencedoperations in Zambia and set up a local branch named CAREZambia. The initial focus of its programs was emergencyrelief in response to the severe drought of the early 1990sand interventions to militate against the effects ofescalating inflation and extreme poverty in urban areas. Twoyears after its inauguration, CARE Zambia launched thePeri-Urban Lusaka Small Enterprise (PULSE) Project. Theoverall goal is to increase household income, economicsecurity and employment opportunities among the families ofpoor micro-entrepreneurs in peri-urban areas of Zambia,through the provision of sustainable savings and creditservices. The program provides working capital to micro andsmall-scale entrepreneurs, mostly women, who reside in theperi-urban areas of Mtendere and George. This service hasrecently been extended to Mandevu, Chawama and someperi-urban areas of Lusaka.
