【 摘 要 】
The objective of this paper is todescribe the evolution, composition, and determinants offinancing to the nonfinancial private sector in Mexicobetween 2000 and 2005. Supported by the macroeconomicenvironment and financial system reforms, total financing tothe private sector (particularly consumer credit) increasedrelative to GDP, while accessibility and affordabilitygenerally improved. Equity issuance did not play animportant role during the period under consideration.Although the supply of financing shifted toward domesticnonbank providers, commercial banks remain the primarysource of funding. Significant progress was made in cleaningup bank loan portfolios and in strengthening financialsystem soundness and infrastructure. The prospects forcontinued private sector financing growth remain verypositive, but financing is not spread out evenly across allmarket segments. The authors conclude with some policyimplications to further facilitate deeper and broaderfinancing of the private sector.
