【 摘 要 】

This note states that LatinAmerica's urban population has grown, and its solidwaste has increased at an even faster pace. Today theregion's urban areas generate about 369,000 tons a dayof solid waste. Ensuring that the waste is collected anddisposed of properly will require strengthening thestrategic role of municipalities. The private sector alreadyplays a big part in waste collection. But private providerscould do more in waste disposal and management, helping toimprove service in close coordination with localauthorities. Given the methane gas currently released fromlandfills, carbon finance is another potential driver ofmanagement improvements.
