Conditional cash transfer (CCT) programsgive families cash to pay for basic health and schoolexpenses (if children attend school and regularly visithealth clinics).CCTs have two main objectives: to increaseincome and alleviate poverty in the short term, and to breakthe inter-generational cycle of poverty by increasing humancapital.Various situations have led to their creation indifferent countries.The World Bank (WB) supports CCTs inLatin America, Eastern Europe, the Middle-East and Far East.In 2002, the Bank's Latin American and Caribbean Regionand the Mexican government sponsored the first regionalworkshop on experiences with CCTs..This article summarizesthe lessons of experience in designing and operating CCTsshared by officials, donors and academics at the workshop.
