【 摘 要 】
The authors examine an issue at thenexus of domestic competition policy and internationaltrade, the interaction between goods trade and market powerin domestic trade and distribution sectors. Theory suggestsa set of linkages between service-sector competition andgoods trade supported by econometrics involving imports of22 OECD countries compared with 69 exporters. Competition inservices affects the volume of goods trade. Additionally, because of interaction between tariffs and competition, themarket structure of the domestic service sector becomesincreasingly important as tariffs are reduced. Empiricallyservice competition apparently matters most for exporters insmaller, poorer countries. The results also suggest thatwhile negotiated agreements leading to cross-border servicesliberalization may boost goods trade as well, they may alsolead to a fall in goods trade when such liberalizationinvolves foreign direct investment leading to increasedservice sector concentration.
