The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS),supported by the US Centers for Disease Prevention andControl and the World Health Organization, was carried outin Kiev, in the Ukraine in 1999, one of the first of manycountries to implement this standardized school-based surveyof teenage smoking behavior, attitudes and knowledge. Thisreport presents background information on smoking andtobacco control policies in Ukraine. It presents simpledescriptive statistics of the GYTS survey data, focusingespecially on the relationship between smoking behavior, cigarette prices, and other factors that can be affected bypolicies intended to reduce smoking in order to reduce theassociated burden of disease and premature death. Multipleregressions explore the factors that affect the decision tosmoke, and the number of cigarettes that current smokersreport smoking each month, and find that price appears to bea significant determinant, along with age, gender, andefforts by schools to ensure that students are well informedabout the effects that smoking has on health.
