【 摘 要 】
This paper attempts to explain thedeterminants of the propensity to armed struggle and theprobability of participation by individuals in the NigerDelta region of Nigeria using primary (micro) data. Whilegrievance appears to be pervasive among individuals andcommunities in the region and can be systematicallyexplained, neither the grievance level nor its commonlycited causal factors appear to be strong enough to create adisposition toward armed rebellion. Rather, factors thatreduce the opportunity cost and risk of participation orincrease the perceived benefits appear to be more important. The study identifies three of these factors that areamenable to the policymaker's (government's)control as income level, educational attainment, andgovernment presence.
