【 摘 要 】
The authors examine the role ofmigration networks in determining self-selection patterns ofMexico-U.S. migration. They first present a simpletheoretical framework showing how such networks impact onmigration incentives at different education levels and, consequently, how they are likely to affect the expectedskill composition of migration. Using survey data fromMexico, the authors then show that the probability ofmigration is increasing with education in communities withlow migrant networks, but decreasing with education incommunities with high migrant networks. This is consistentwith positive self-selection of migrants being driven byhigh migration costs, and with negative self-selection ofmigrants being driven by lower returns to education in theU.S. than in Mexico.
