This paper evaluates the economic valueof water in three locations in the Rio Bravo Basin. Formallyknown as the Bravo-Conchos, this basin overlaps across fiveMexican states, beneath the Rio Bravo in northeasternMexico. The paper also estimates the level of economicoutput in terms of value added for the main economicactivities, using official statistics. The evaluation ofwater use provides elements of analysis needed to establishpriorities in a quantitative fashion, utilizing anaggregation approach, while resorting to macroeconomicconcepts. In terms of efficiency, there is a need toincrease the municipal water tariffs to assist with thefinancial deficit faced by the water operators. Whether theyare public agencies or private firms, the enterprisesinvolved in all aspects of water services must betransparent and accountable in their actions and policy.
