【 摘 要 】
The objective of this paper is to shedlight on current trends and policy challenges in thefinancing of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) bybanks in Colombia. The paper is motivated by thewell-documented financing gap for SMEs, whose causes arecomplex and multi-dimensional. Based on data collection andinterviews with the authorities, a representative sample ofbanks, and other relevant entities, the authors analyze theevolution and characteristics of this market in recentyears. Bank financing to SMEs is becoming a strategicsegment for Colombian credit institutions. The currentbusiness and risk management models for SME lending arestill relatively underdeveloped, but greater sophisticationis expected as the market matures. Important institutionaland policy constraints to SME lending remain, but are notyet binding. In order to address these constraints beforethey "begin to bite", the authors identify anddescribe a potential policy reform agenda.
