This paper discusses the role of thepostal network in expanding access to financial services inEgypt. It reviews the public postal operator within thepostal sector and within the broader context of thecommunications sector. The roles of the postal network andstate and privately-owned banks are also reviewed from theperspective of the financial sector development, withparticular focus on payments systems development andmicrofinance. The ultimate goal of postal reform is tocreate a system where modern technology and a free flow ofinformation benefit the customer. A modern, efficient postalservice that utilizes the latest information technology willnot only increase Egypt's social and economicdevelopment, but will also contribute significantly to thecreation of an Egyptian information society.
